Anyone growing their own BOSS?

So, I'm always looking for fun things to grow with my daughters. After a little research, I see I can plant Black Oil Sunflower Seeds straight in the ground, and harvest or save for later.
Anyone else try this? Those bags of BOSS are getting expensive.

I've planted some sunflowers in the garden this year. I plan to let it go to seed stage, cut the seed heads off & store the large heads (vacuum seal & freeze probably) until ready to use. Then you have a great activity & scratch type treat for winter. I will also save some seeds to plant next year as well.
