These guys seem to have a general purpose sensor -http://www.elertus.com/

Has iPhone and Android apps, (WIFi only, I would have liked Ethernet/POE option)
Alerts sent to app, or SMS, or email

I am a newb and about to take my hens out to their coop this weekend and thinking I'd like to know if I need to turn the heat on and or if anyone/anything is trying to get in.

Thanks!

A game camera will let you know what's coming around at night, doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the other one but affective. If your birds are feathered out they don't need any heat ever.

mine are feathered but pretty young, and the temps are still borderline ... I also heard that they lay longer if heated at winter, is that not true? Thanks

No heat does nothing but raise your electric bill, they need 12 hours of daylight to keep laying on a regular basis, a small light on a timer works well, mine comes on at 4am and goes off around 7am daily and kept them trucking all winter.

Thanks @jetdog !

Also, since I already bought this I'd like to inform fellow BYCers that this device does not seem appropriate for other purposes (such as alerting if a predator or thief is trying to gain access to the coop) and I am returning it as we speak. Msg me if you want more info.
