It seems to me that unless you are willing to cull at the first signs of CRD, every single time, this is something you'll most probably have to deal with regularly if you keep any number of hens, large or small.

I've got myself a small kit of useful meds for future potential outbreaks of CRD/MG/MS/etc, and intend to use it both preventatively and theraputically for my now 'carrier' flock. (I cannot go culling my pets willy nilly - I'm simply not that kind of poultry owner. For me, they're pets, not livestock - that may make me a bit soft, but I really do love them dearly!)

Henrietta is, by the way, recovering well already, and without Tylan IM injections. Marie has been dunking her head in Tylan soluble and sloshing her face with it (as well as having her drink it). I suppose the idea is that she will get some into her nose and eyes, and at the same time will swallow a bit, and that way get plenty of it to the parts that matter! (And I won't have a month's withdrawal on the eggs, as I would if she had been given the Tylan IM.)

So, we expect to get her, and Bella, and maybe Deirdre (if they will accept her this time) back on Monday or Tuesday. Yay!

Just a quick update for anyone out there either following my girls' progress or, as reassurance to those who may be in the throes of an MG/CRD outbreak themselves - they're all fine and coming home today! Yay!

Marie called us last night to say that they were all fully recovered, even the very poorly one Deirdre, using nothing more than high dose Tylan soluble, which she dunked their heads in three times a day (and gave them to drink at all other times). No IM injections, no other meds of any kind.

Bella, our feisty Bluebelle, never showed even the slightest sign of catching it from the other two, so either the Tylan in the water she was drinking acted as a preventative, or she's just simply as strong as an ox (we suspect the latter!)!

Deirdre took longest to recover, but was in the worst state. She's doing just fine now - completely normal again.

Henrietta began to look better within 24 hours, and is now (five days later) even better than she was before the illness. She's eating heartily, (she was always a bit thin and picky) and strutting around looking proud and puffed up, just as buff orps are supposed to! (She had always looked a bit sickly to me.)

And best of all, Marie has managed to get them all to live together as friends since they've been in isolation, meaning that we can bring all three girls home and put them together in the same pen.

A happy ending, if ever there was one!

So, for anyone who ever goes through the horror of their whole flock succumbing to CRD/MG, simply dunk their heads in Tylan soluble for five days, and watch those girls come on in leaps and bounds! I sincerely hope it will work for you too...

Small footnote though - Deirdre didn't come back with us today in the end. She started to sniffle again today and Marie decided not to put us through the trauma of taking her while she might still be a little poorly. So, our two big girls are home with us, and that's the main thing. We'll stick with two for now anyway, and get them back to being settled before we think about increasing the flock.

Henrietta seems like a different bird - fatter and more robust than she's looked in weeks. It's nothing short of a miracle!
