What does 'lock down' mean?

Lock down is the last 4 days of incubation you stop turning the eggs so the chicks can position themselves for hatching and you increase the humidity so it is easier for the chicks to get out of the membrane easier and they dont get stuck also stop opening your incubator so you dont have any more temperature or humidity fluctuations.and sit back and wait for day 21 hatching begins.

Last night I candled the 7 eggs under my broody hen. Four were infertile.
I hope the remaining three hatch Thursday.

I'll be going on lockdown right after work tomorrow night. As hard as these first 18 days are, those last 3 are worse.

At least some of the eggs are starting to rock so I know there's still life in there.

I got my first two pips this afternoon and now I have two wonderful White Silkie chicks!

My two green eggs, one brown egg, and 2 more silkies have pipped!

I should have more fuzzy butts in the morning!

Yep - count me in! I locked down 13 RIR yesterday and have another batch which will be locked down on Thurday.

I'm hatching today is day 21 and my chicks started hatching yesterday. This is what we have so far. All eggs are from my chickens. This hatch is going great.
10 of 11 andalusians have hatched
8of 9 lakenvelders have hatched
5 of 6 ws x br have hatched
7 of 10 welsummers have hatched.

I have 1 pip on the welsummers.

today is day 19 and umm well i have a quiet incubator.

but i keep checking for pips but my last hatch ran late due to thermometer saying high temp but was off by 5 degrees come to find out so fixed that issue hoping for fluffy butts in two days

after taking out infertiles i have 9 of 13 black copper marans and 5 of 6 of our barnyard mix
