Anyone hatching Dec 14th? Looking for hatching buddies for 1st hatch!

Rin, I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know what I would do if this happens to me. Right now I have teary eyes thinking of you , please know that we know that you tried everything, were the perfect chick cheerleader but Mother Nature had a different idea. With some of the chicks being so deformed, maybe despite your efforts, they had a slim chance of surviving anyway. I know it's no consolation...but maybe just a nudge not to be so hard on yourself.

I looked up the kind of chicks you're going for and boy are they beautiful!! I wonder what their tempermant is like? Real beauties!!

I am glad that you're going to try again. You'll hatch your chicks and hopefully by the first week of the New Year.

Did you use a hygrometer?

Use cardboard cartons, not styrofoam and cut the bottoms out so air/humidity can circulate. Good luck!

Yeah i used the paper ones and cut holes in the bottoms. Hoping for happy healthy chicks!!! This was also my first time using a fan in the bator. I'm always hesitant to change things, when they worked ok before, but if I can get even better hatches, I think its worth a try.

Sorry if I'm coming across like a mother hen, I just want everyone to have a good hatch! keep us posted!

Ok, LD officially in progress. I did go out and get a hydrometer...finally. I am using the carton method. Paper carton....with holes in the bottom.

Praying for a good hatch and already feeling like pacing the floor. LOL! I know, I will calm down after my first hatch. But for this one, I am WIRED!!!

Thank you and I'm so sorry. I deal with grief very oddly. I'm like, that one kid the parents CAN sneak a replacement hamster in there. I'm not stupid. i know it's different so I cry until I pass out, accept it and try to move on. So when I realized they were dead I really did cry that hard but now that I calmed down... I'm trying to look at it rationally. Nature decided it wasn't going to happen this time. So I decided to either fix up my incubator again or try another far less rare breed where breeders DO sell the day-olds and ship them. Like... *purrs* anyone selling and shipping blue silkie chicks? Mpc will have some in feb I hope so if not...

and yes they are very beautiful and very sweet too, if you go to youtube you can find one or two people keep indoors like house pets. As for hydrometer. I did, but unfortunately I was trying to incubate on the dryer side of things a little. Like everyone is conflicted on where the humidity is supposed to be. Mine was around 40% for incubation but I couldn't get it higher than 60% for LD until after pips and when I followed the suggestion someone posted. By then it was probably too late anyway.

The humidity was still high when I got home from doing this and it held till today when it dropped to 58-60% It could just be the year for me really.

Where do you live? If you live anywhere close to me I would give you some test eggs to work on. It might be better to try some local eggs even if they aren't exactly the breed you want - just to get a feel for your incubator and such. I'm a guy and I was pretty upset about losing just 1 near hatch last time. It isn't easy seeing a healthy fully formed chick that died. It is the nature of chicken hatching for things to not always go as planned. Even mother hens lose whole clutches sometimes so you can't really fault yourself.

Hope you get feeling better soon. When you finally hatch your first healthy bunch it will be worth it.
