heres my chick. his fluff isnt very fluffy yet. and i think hes missing a toe on each foot or its shorter than the rest. ive never hatched a cochin before

I hope your fingers are better soon too! I know how that goes! I was two weeks like that after working on my aviary.

stephanie1992 What a cute little one! It reminds me of the EE we hatched a while back.
one of the silkies had matted fluff for a day or so. I would just gently rub it a little here and there with my finger tip and it fluffed up beautiful!

I'm not familiar with the breed you have, so I dont know about the toes. I hope it's normal and O.K.

Melissa I'm sorry you had to do that but you know it was for the best and I did the baking soda and vinegar on my little crossed beak ameraucana we hatched and I feel it is the best way.

Stephanie..does he really have only 2 toes? Poor little guy...but otherwise he looks just fine..

I did a search for cull chick here on BYC and came across a post that suggested to get a large kitchen container and a smaller container that fits into it but is not to small. You put the chick into the container in a swaddle of cloth then put a small amount of baking soda into the smaller container. You then add the vinegar to the baking soda and cover the large container with it's lid or saran wrap. The chick literally passed in seconds. It did not struggle for breath it just laid its head down and it was over. I was agonizing about it until I did it but it was the right thing to do for the chick.
