I just love seeing them grow & fluff out! When I worked at the Portland Zoo, I showed Silkie Chickens, & Mucovy Ducks
as well as opossoms, ferrets, various snakes, lizards etc., spiders, hissing cockroaches & other fuzzy & scaly stuff to the public. I loved showing the silkies they were always so cuddly & sweet ~ But the the two Muscovies were MEAN & would chase and bite you! We always flipped a coin on who got to show "Guenivere & I forgot the males name". The real only experiences I have with poultry soooo YIKES I think I am in for trial & error! I am going to need your guys eggspertise

What is Wry neck? & whats up with the walking backwards
hu.gif

OH got 1 more this morning!

Sounds like a fun job!

Wry neck (from what I have read) can have several causes, genetics, injury, vitamin deficency, etc. This ones started right after birth. It tucks its head to the side, or under its chest. I am trying vitamins now. Not sure what my second approach will be. As long as its eatting and drinking I will continue treating.

Well I'm in day 2 of lockdown....a little nervous since it is my first time, not sure what to watch for.
I have a hovabator and we live in the NV high desert with very low humidity. I have both reservoirs
filled, but if it gets low during lockdown should I just leave it alone? Also does everyone buy
chick starter for food? or do you just grind your scratch or layer?

Hooray! My chicks started hatching yesterday morning (day 21) and I had more this morning. Will post a picture when all is said and done. So far I have 4 Wheaten Marans (of 4), 3 Easter Eggers (of 3), 1 Blue/Black/Splash Orpington (of 4), 1 Lavender Oprington (of 3), and 3 mixed chicks (of 4). The mixes were my "control" eggs from my own coop. My husband's Blue Jersey Giant rooster was in with my black hens (Australorps, Sex-links, and Jersey Giants) so if they're hens I'll keep them to lay and if roosters they'll head for the stew pot. A few more were pipping when I left the house so I'll get my final count this evening. I posted earlier in the thread when I had candled, I believe. At that time I had one dud and two questionable ones out of a total of 18 eggs. The "?" eggs hatched but I tossed the dud. I think the dud was one of the three lavender Orpington eggs. 1 B/B/S Orpington pipped but was dead when I cleared out shells this morning. So, there is still potential for up to four more chicks when I get home.

Still no pips and yesterday was hatch day,

hoping I will get some today, I just don't understand how they were all developed when I went in lock down and none made it? What should I do, just wait a little while more?

I love all the pictures of everyone's new babies though, congrats!!!

Candled my 16 mixed at day 7 (12/02) and all show normal development, Had one egg showing what appeared like two air sacs, one at each end of the egg??
Four of the little embries were very active showing lots of movement.

I don't think I can handle another complete failed attempt. I just don't get it because our first hatch went so well, but they were our own eggs, not shipped.
