One of my black silkies decided to come out of its eggs today(which is day 19). Its peeping so loud that all the other silkie chicks are starting to decide to come out to! I have 8 others that are making some progress but none are close to actually coming out yet. Hopefully I'll have more chicks by tomorrow. One was making a little progress this morning but hasn't made anymore since. I hope all of them hatch! I have 18 eggs left to hatch now, last time I candled( which was before lockdown)they were all developing so hopefully they will all make it!

I have to keep reminding myself that its only day 19 though!

The first chick to come out:

Sorry, I know its a bad picture but it was the best one I could get.

I set up 2 incubators, like the small foam, ones. i took a sharpie and made a grid on my "good" incubator, that way i could easily keep track of the eggs and what day they were put in..

Once they get close to hatching i put them in the old incubator without the egg turner. I found that works pretty good.

However i just got an old red wood incubator, and it holds 2500-2900 eggs..... so im going to have to mod my strategy :p

Is it ok to put eggs into the same incubator on different days?

No because their lock down day would be on different days. I've done it before where I put in eggs that were put in two days before the other eggs, and they did hatch but I put the other eggs on there correct lock down day and there lock down day was late but they still hatched. One had difficulties hatching but it wasn't because of that it was because the humidity dropped one night and it got dried up.

If you can pick up another incubator, it works ok, you just have to be quick when you move them. i would stager them about 4 days apart when you put in the eggs, so technically you could lock down one batch for 4 days, and then take them out, and lock down a second group of eggs.

i dis this with my foam incubators, i bought 1 from TSC with an egg turner for like 80 bucks. Then i picked up one at a yard sale for 10 Bucks, without a egg turner, and kinda crummy looking. But it works well for the lockdown since you dont need a turner, and it also makes sure my incubator dosent stink, because there hatched in the old "grungy" incubator.

:p
