Anyone HATCHING?!?!? Newbie's and addicts WELCOME!!!! Hatch Calendar page 1!!!!

So as of this morning I am up to 8 chicks!

Its day 21 but I'm not hopeful that any others will hatch ...

Here is my question.... I know shipped eggs are a gamble and I am having a heck of a time hatching shipped silkies. My first set not a single one hatched .... I did dry incubation on that set as I had read so much about it.... Not 1 ... nope nothing .... This time I decided to keep the humidity up at about 40-45% ish for the 1st 18 days letting it drop a little bit b/w water refills. I had 15 silkies go into lockdown w/ 5 being questionable... so far 2 of those have hatched. The first one out was very wet... not a clean hatch and its abdomen was not completely healed .... It has not fluffed up as it seems to have sticky stuff matting the feathers even though it wasn't stuck to the shell. The 2nd one to hatch was a clean hatch and has fluffed up ..... I see no more activity in any of the other 12 eggs ....

What am I doing wrong??? I am using a genesis hovobator with turner and at lockdown I am moving the eggs to the wire mesh ... should I just unplug the turner and leave the eggs in it??? Or put them in cartons???

The free local silkie eggs 7 went into lockdown and as of this morning 6 had hatched..... They were clean hatches and those chicks are FLUFFY and so healthy!!!! I did dry incubation for those and could only get that bator up to 50ish% humidity for lockdown.... It is amazing how much easier and more active the embryos of the local eggs were to see when candling... It really is a great indicator of the trauma the eggs go through in the mail!

Anybody with suggestions, advice ..... I was so worried that I'd not get a single of my shipped silkies to hatch that yesterday that I snatched up another auction of eggs arriving soon

.... So I'd like to figure out what went wrong and remedy it on the next hatch!!!

I will get some pictures of the new silkies tonight and post them for you all to see .... Thanks for the help!

Wish I had better advice but I had the same problem with shipped eggs when I use to use my LG, my first batch of shipped silkies not 1 hatched, my second batch I had 1 hatch out of 12 that died 2 days later, still don't know what happened with that one. My first hatch with my RCom-20 I put 19 shipped eggs in and only had 2 hatch that are almost 2 months old now. And my last hatch I put 39 shipped eggs in and hatched 17. There are so many things that can happen to shipped eggs before you get them it's always going to be a gamble. I have never had a genisis hovabator so I don't know how stable it is or anything like that? One thing I would suggest if you aren't already doing is using a wiggler to help monitor temp, have you heard of that? Seemed to help me alot, I'll explain more if want. Just don't give up, I was very discouraged when I first started hatching. My goal is to get all the breeds that I want to hatch so I don't have to buy shipped eggs anymore for this exact reason. So sorry!

Thanks silkiemom1986! It is amazing to see the difference b/w shipped eggs and local!!!
I'm not giving up as I have more eggs coming soon but it is so depressing to get this far and get so little. I am really thankful for my 2 that hatched and my 6 free fluffers!

On another note I have a pip on my own egg this morning :) a silkie ameraucanas cross!
I can't wait to see my little chickens little one.

Hatch date it March 9th so getting close!!! I have some wellsummer eggs being shipped to me to go in the bator after these, hatching is soooo addicting!!!

Tonight begins lockdown!!!! My first hatch EVER! 41 placed. Here is a photo of the candling, look on schedule or not? Man I really hope so!

For some reason I'm thinking they should look much darker!

These are my 2 Molitos that hatched on Friday!!! They are from my own black ameraucana hen x White Silkie Rooster cross... In case anybody was curious what black & white make ... It's black :)

I never thought that I'd be able to hatch my own eggs as I am not allowed to have a rooster where I live... but Tiny rooster got busy FAST!!! 2 out of 2 hatched and of course now people are requesting my little Molitos!! 6 more went in the bator last night
