Good idea. Hadn't thought of that. Was thinking of setting a fan in the coop but wasn't sure it wouldn't create too much of a draft. Now it looks like 2 hens (both a BO mix) are broody & maybe the duck.while it's hot, and they're trying to sit you could put a couple frozen water bottles out in the coop to help keep it cooler in there for your hen...not too close to the eggs though obviously.
Isn't it amazing the things we learn to help our animals? It's pretty cool.I had one like that once, its the equivalent of contracted tendons in a foal. My vet (yes I brought a day-old chick to my, very game, vet) had me do physical therapy with a pen or a pencil. hold the chick with feet facing you and wrap those little toes (both feet) around the pencil and push toward him. The chick will instinctively push back and that will stretch those tendons. It took about 3 days of doing that about 5X a day and she was walking like a champ. Come to think of it, I had a kitten with the same problem, my vet said that if the PT didn't work we were going to have to go for chelation therapy. The PT worked and the kitten was fine.
If you make the fan face the outside so that the hot coop air is being blown OUT then it doesn't give the eggs a draft, while still getting some of the heat pushed out.Good idea. OK, I can do that. Did set a 2qt plastic container filled with a block of ice near the hen. That seemed to help her a bit. She didn't seem so stressed from the heat. Combining the two ideas should make things a lot better. If you make the fan face the outside so that the hot coop air is being blown OUT then it doesn't give the eggs a draft, while still getting some of the heat pushed out.![]()
No problem! I have young ducks, but they love when I put water bottles in their pool, too. I hope that works for your broody hen. Good luck, too on your eggs!OK, I can do that.
