Anyone have experience with Canada Geese?

You do not need paperwork to own a Canada goose. You have to have a permit to sell or give away Migrating Birds.. They are not illegal to own. You can buy them from several hatcheries and ebayers have Canada goose eggs for sale. Some of the ebayers send a copy of the proper paperwork with the eggs, some don't. You can always ask before bidding if they will be sending the necessary paperwork. I've had Canada geese for 7 years. No one cares. Haven't been to prison yet. I put red food coloring in their pool so that neighbors (we have a ranch) know that the pink Canadas are mine.

It's strange the way people just make up stuff. Or like the guy who said his neighbor takes eggs from their nest. You're right - that's illegal, but I'm sure he knows that... Just seems like sometimes people miss their years of being the student hall monitor.

"They have to be rendered flightless." That is not true. I have no idea where the writer got that, but it is not true. I always clipped their flight feathers the first year because they were too young to go flying off with no parents. I would not pinion a Canada goose - what if it outlives you, what if, for some reason, you cannot keep it and have to find someone who has Canada geese who will know how to keep it and gradually let it out - all those things. You can't change your mind once you've pinioned a bird, but clipping their flight feathers does not hurt and it is temporary. It's for you and for the bird's safety to "render them flightless." And they can still go quite a way with a good wind.

You need a migratory bird license to sell or give away a Canada goose. If you have one, you should have the paper that the seller/giver gave you with the bird. They do not have to be "rendered flightless." I don't know who told you that, but it's not true.

i hatched one last year it was very imprinted on me until he started staying with the ducks then it started to act like them.
They do good with ducks they don't really peck at the ducks like my African geese did
all and all they are usually sweet and quiet.

I agree! I think anyone who has had a Canada goose as a pet would recommend them. They are calm and quieter than dometic geese. I had Canadas and Roman Tufteds at the same time when we lived on the ranch. The Roman gander HATED the UPS man AND his truck. He would bite (from behind, of course - Fred was not nearly as courageous as he wanted people to think! LOL) but he'd bite the brown pants of the UPS man. I don't think he ever got to his skin. A goose bite hurts so much more than you would think. They have those little pointed dinosaur teeth and give their heads a sharp jerk as they bite. OUCH! The man used to have to back out of our area and over the hill, with Fred attacked his van's tires in a frenzy. Why didn't I video tape it? :( You always think you'll have a million more chances.

You technically don't need a permit to own (only own, can't sell or gift any part of the birds/eggs/offspring) captive-bred Canada geese. When you aquire one from a properly licensed individual or group, they will fill out a FWS Form 3-186 and provide you a copy (you sign a copy and leave with them for their legally required records). This 3-186 proves your birds were properly aquired and marked in one of 4 approved methods, only one of which is being rendered flightless by pinioning. Some states may have additional requirements beyond this, you would need to check with your DNR to make certain. The federal law governing these beautiful birds also states you cannot 'wild-capture' or take eggs you find in nature. You can perform a google search for "FWS 3-200-9" for the application paperwork to obtain a sale permit, which would allow you to sell your eggs/goslings/adult birds. It also has a small Q/A which should cover most other questions about Canada Goose ownership/sales. I own three fledglings, and intend to purchase three more this summer to make 3 mated pairs. They're hilarious to watch, and compaired to other farm geese I've interacted with, they're fearless.

It depends where you live. Are you in the US?
