No no no.... She said she is thinking of using a big under-the-bed storage bin as their playpen. I think it's safe to assume that nobody will be in it when it is actually under the bed!
Also, I forget who said it but a tank is not an appropriate habitat for a rat, whether there is a wire topper or not. There's simply not enough ventilation and rats have especially fragile respiratory systems. Also, rats should almost never be kept alone. There are very few who absolutely can't be kept with other rats due to aggression, but that's pretty rare. They're incredibly social and need others of their species to communicate with, groom each other, etc. Rats that are kept alone often suffer from depression and related health issues. They should be kept in same-sex or spayed/neutered pairs or colonies. There are many places to adopt already speutered rats from, too! Just thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who didn't know and was considering rats as a pet.
