Anyone know anything about trumpets?

Lots of great advice!! Thank you so much! I pondered this all night and unless DH has a diff. idea, I will tell the lady we are going to look for something else. I thought the chemical wash was just a cleaning, like in between owners, and had no idea it was for tarnish. I didn't even think to look at a pawn shop. I will try to find a music company and see about getting prices and rent-to-own info. Thanks so much!!!

I would definitely recommend rent-to-own. That way if it ends up that they don't want to continue playing than you haven't spent a ton of money.

I was talking to our pastor's wife today and they have a trumpet they aren't using, so she is going to let us have it, FOR FREE!!!! It may need a cleaning and one of the keys (?) is stuck, but for free we can do a few things to it. Thanks again for all the advice!!

You sure can't beat free! Hooray! It is normal for the keys to stick, especially if it hasn't been used for awhile. All you need to do is purchase some valve oil from the music store, which you son will need anyways. Keys need to be oiled periodically. I'm glad that everything worked out so well!

Free...That's great news! We started out with a borrowed instrument too. You can't beat that...no use in putting a lot of $$$ into it until you know they are going to stick with it. Good Luck!

We purchased a beautiful refurbished Olds trumpet off of a good seller on EBAY, for 195 dollars.... THE Olds trumpets are no longer made, but hold thier value very well. They are considered a low cost but really good quality, tone, etc. instrument. You might want to google Olds Trumpets... Our daughter has been very happy with hers. Parts for them are still available.
