Anyone know how to use Gentian Violet for SourCrop/Yeast?

I've read Gentian Violet works wonders on yeast in the crop, which I'm pretty sure is the case with my chicken. But the only amdinistering directions I can find are for baby parrots, and to use a q-tip down the throat and "paint" the inside of the crop with it. There's no way that would work on a grown chicken. I don't know if it's ok to let her just swallow some, or how much? For humans, it says do not swallow. Does anyone know how to administer Gentian Violet to a chicken's crop? Or if it's even a good idea?

I think if you can find a pharmacist with a sense of humor they will enjoy looking this up for you. The older the better. It works in children well and is cheap, but man is it messy. Before you touch a bottle make sure you have on clothes that you don't care about and rubber gloves.
If I were going to apply it I would use paintbrush. The don't swallow it is more a warning that it won't work on humans if swallowed rather than applied because it works on contact not through the digestive tract.

I don't think I could do the paintbrush thing. I'd probably end up painting her lungs or something. Do you think I could just put some in her mouth to swallow then massage her crop? Will it stain her beak and mouth too?

I realize I am 13 years late to this, but I was wondering the same thing. I am thinking that since it is essentially a form of thrush, and you treat human infants with Gentian Violet by applying it with a cotton swab inside their mouth; perhaps you can do the same for a chicken.

I am a retired pediatric nurse, and although gentian violet was used many years ago for oral thrush, those days are over. Nowadays, Nystatin for people or Mediastatin for birds is used. Many chicken people also use miconazole (Monistat 7 cream) or clotrimazole cream given orally 1/2 inch twice a day for sour crop fungal infection.

I guess a lot has changed in 18 years then. I was prescribed gentian violet for my infant son and myself in 2005.

Did you enf up trting the Gentian? I have digestive enzymes i want to use with it but i been wondering if its safe too and how big a dosage?

I would get Medistatin or Nystatin powder a small amount of in water or use Monistat/miconazole cream 1/2 inch given orally twice a day. Gentian violet was used many years ago to paint the inside of an infant’s mouth for oral thrush, until more modern and safer medicines came along. Here is the Nystatin powder and dosage is 2/3 of a teaspoonful powder twice a day. Mix it in a little water and give it orally with a syringe.
