Anyone know (maybe) Hindu gods or buddha's? UPDATE page 2

Look at it very closely under a magnefying glass. look for tell tale marks left by the maker. Is it very very smooth? are the angles very accurate? any solder or welds? LOL does it have a 14k stamped in it LOL? all marks of a manufactured piece, not that it's not valuable but indicates that may not have been hand made like INca or Indian artefacts.

Hand made stuff will have little imperfections like small dents in the gold from the hammering, or the stone won't be a mirror finish, only polished because they didn't have cerium oxide, tin oxide, or cromium oxide and a lapidary wheel to polish it.

Some people can even tell if the maker was left or right handed by the marks he left behind...

This tip was great and the people on the site very helpful. They make me want to get my metal detector out and go huntin'.

It appears to be a Thai Buddha of some sort. They are usually made of a very pure gold.

We have found some sites of people who collect them and I even sent an email to a guy in Thailand but he didn't have any info to share.

Mystery kinda solved!!

WOW, I wish I had found that!

Thanks Writerofwords, I just joined that sight. I have a bunch of Indian pottery pieces I want information on.

I'm glad you guys like that site, I've really enjoyed it. Yes you SHOULD grab a metal detector and a pinpointer and get going, I love it!!

ETA:

Make sure it's legal to detect in the area you are in. Most beaches it is fine, some parks ok, but if it's not it should be posted.

Hmmm... I just got a (professional grade) detector from my dad's estate (been wanting a detector to play around with).

I may have to go visit that site.

old ones, especially)

I've wanted a bottle tree for SO long - would definately have to buy/make one if I found those bottles like that.

ok... if anyone in MD. finds a jade necklace in the Chesapeake bay... that's mine.

I've taken my detector to local parks and looked through the sandy play areas and found everything from a 1923 class ring to an 8 carat diamond wedding set. I do everything I can to try and find the owners of things like that because you know someone lost them playing with their kids and had to go home in tears and admit they lost them.
I posted a pic of a necklace I found in El Paso a couple of years ago, it was engraved on the back and the person it belonged to saw it on the site. She contacted me and was so happy it had been found because her mother had given it to her and the engraving was from her great grandmother to her grandmother on her wedding day.
A lot of times though you can't find the owner and it's yours.
I take my students out to the playground a few times a year with detectors and pin pointed and we try and find all the lost jewelry and money we can. I've had people stop to see what I'm doing and then ask me to look for something for them that they lost in another area. I don't mind helping if I can, it's very rewarding. It's also a rush when you find something there is little chance of finding the owner of and you just know it's going to be yours!!
