I agree- Craigslist, Freecycle, I Wanna, try them. I used to be skeptical, and then scored exactly what I needed on Craigslist. It just sometimes takes patience.

If you are living in an urban area, you can troll the alleys and other areas where dumpsters are. Or look for homes being re-modeled. I built the first, main section of my coop for around $100, the put a 5 x 5 addition on it for just the cost of the wire, using all salvaged wood.

Totally agree...I've found several wooden sheds and wooden playhouses (big enough for 10 hens) on CL for $150 and under...posted them and other BYC members snatched them up (I didn't need ANOTHER coop...lol). By the time you remodel a bit, cost would still be under $400.

If you are not looking to build, My Pet Chicken has a 3-4 chicken coop for $399.

I thought I was going to get off cheap by building my own. . . got some FREE wooden store fixtures which was the deciding factor to start this chicken thing . . . $700 (or more!) and two months later I am nearly finished with building the CHONDO!!!

I saw some on ebay for around $299...but I don't know if they are what you're looking for. It has been a while...but I would check there.
