This is exactly what we are doing in our barn/shed. Neighbors have told us that the area we are using was once used to house goats.

So there is some framing already in that will be perfect for putting in a door. We also have some shelves in that will be great for nesting boxes. And best of all, plenty of room to add to our flock in the future.

It's exciting isn't it Heather?... Right now hubby is building the brooder for the chicks.. Just not enough room in the tote for them. Hopefully we can get the rest of the barn painted this weekend. I have two other big gates like that. So we are going to double the run, and put Chicken Wire down the middle. I wanted the outside chew proof as we have bob cats and mountain lions around here..

The other side will be for the ducks

They will have their own house in their run though..

I'm still working on the inside.. Building it in my head.. we'll see.. I just want to get the most use of the space..

The roost is just a board that runs from the half wall to where we cut out more windows on the back there. I think it might be screwed in to the wall, if that. It's a 2x6 board. The nest boxes are just framed in kind of like a ladder laid down, 2x4s from the front to the back, and then cut down 2x4s to make the "sides". Some girls lay in the box, some lay underneath. It's sitting on two concrete blocks and then screwed to the wall. We're simple

One of the things that I like most about my run is that I can stand up in it to clean it out. I made my run as secure as the coop it's self because I didn't want my life to revolve around opening and closing a door for my birds, but we live in a very mild climate so there is no door. Looks like you have plenty of property to let them free range while your home, so if it was me I would try to make my run secure and easy to access even if it means making it a bit smaller, for those nights you just can't make it back in time to close the door.

Thanks for the comment..

I will take some updated pictures tomorrow. We are one of the last houses before you get into no mans land.. so large predators are a worry, as are hawks. We have two other panels, so we are going to double the run and put chicken wire down the middle to separated the two.. One will have an small outside coup, while the other you see in the pics will have the 6x10 area in the barn as a coop. We really screwed up when we put the 4x4's in for the posts.. originally this was going to be a pony run area.. I like the idea of having the iron around the bottom because of big cats and coyotes, so we left it for the chickens. Plus it was free..

We plan to extend the posts higher another 3 or 4 foot (depending on the wire we use).. with netting over the top. I may run a strand of electro-braid around the outside just to keep those predators honest.. Weather isn’t such a problem here, and that side of the building has sun in the am, and shade after noon.. Its very dry with little rain.. In the winter time, we get snow, but its usually gone within the day. (very sandy) Hardly ever below 0,. with little humidity.

This will all be set up as we are going to start offering lessons, and a "petting zoo, sanctuary" type thing for the local military kids ect. ..

I like the idea of having a full walk thru door going into the 6x10 coop area in the barn. I want to be able to keep the outside door open during the day. What I am having issues with is this:

The floor is concrete.. I want as little work as possible.. so do I put sand inside the building on top the floor?... If the floor is say 10 ft wide (have to measure) should I have a 5 foot floor space, with roosts along the back, and then a latter going up into a 5 foot lifted area with a drop tray built in under, so i can still store feed and what not under there?.. Or, should I just frame in the whole thing, put a walk thru door in the middle.. box's on one side with roosts on the other, branches and what not.. and call it good?.. I cant make up my mind..
