I picked up this handsome man from someone who had too many roosters. They told me he is a gold laced cochin but he has no feathers on his legs and just doesn't look much like a gold laced anything to me. I suspect he is a mixed breed since I can't find any rooster that really looks like him. Either way, I love him and after 30 days of quarantine he is fitting in well with our current flock.

He is a beauty! I think that he is a crossbred. Check out his legs and feet. I am not certain from that picture, but it looks as if he might have scaly leg mites.

We thought he had that too at first but his legs are fine, just big and light colored. We did have to treat his comb for mites and he had a slight respiratory infection which he was treated for and cleared up as well. He was truly free ranged where he came from and didn't have a proper coop. He roosted in a big apple tree with the other chickens and roosters. He was not used to being approached so we have had to work with him. He is doing well with us now.

Is he quarantined with by only some fencing? New birds can't even go anywhere near your existing flock, because of airborne diseases. If he is indeed only by fencing it is likely the others have or will catch the respiratory infection as sometimes it takes a while to show up. Sadly, even though he recovered from the respiratory infection, he will likely be a carrier for life, which would mean it would be very risky to put him in your flock. :( Also, he is a mix breed.

Yes he was separated on one side by the fence you see here. Everything we have read, he and the other need to see each other to get used to one another so this is how we have integrated new chickens with great success. We treated all the chickens for the respiratory infection, just in case. I hope it doesn't come back, that would be bad news. I was very happy with the integration, it went peacefully even with our rhode island red rooster. All the hens are RIR as well but we have some barred rock chicks we will be introducing soon. I thought this rooster would make pretty babies with our rhodies. We will keep our ears open for any more signs of the respiratory issue, thanks.
