Personally, I think Silkies are adorable. I wish I had room for some. Maybe next year . . .

They are known to be great mothers, they cannot fly, and they are very hard to tell male from female until they are around 4 or 5 months.

silkies are great fun birds. if you live near pa, try www.cjsilkies.com. I got mine from her they are georgeous! they are so funny and fluffy...and those big fluffy feet are hilarious. They are small birds, easy to handle, and I love mine! AND THEY HAVE BRIGHT BLUE EARLOBES! Yes, BRIGHT BLUE! I'm not kidding! Blue skin and meat too!

cool, thanks for all the help everybody! just 1 follow-up question though, which is - if you don't have any roos (like me), isn't better to not have any broody chickens?

At some point, you might want to add to your flock. It's usually cheaper to get hatching eggs than birds, and Silkies will incubate them for you.

But I love my Silkies too much to let that get in the way. You can always break them when they get in the mood. It's kind of annoying, but they're worth it.

Or, yes, if you do want to expand someday, these birds don't let you down. That's the worst downside about them, IMO. Their setting habits can be so random and they can be stubborn.
