Anyone living off the land?

There are ways of living IN the desert and living off the land. It may take a while, but it's totally possible. Check into Permaculture design. Wter is the main component, and if you can manage the small amount of water that you have properly, you can produce food enough for yourself and family in a very short time. We are planning to use these principles to live off the land here in northern Alberta, Canada.

As for soil, it's quite easy to create soil. Using various garbage (cardboard without colours, metal and tape, leaves, compost, chicken poop, coffee grounds, etc... you can create some great soil. The key is managing water properly - storing it in organic soil, not tilling, keeping every drop on your roof, putting sales on contour. Watch that video. It will change your world forever!

Somewhere I can get an acre or more for fairly cheap-real cheap. Somewhere not in the southern states where its too hot. Somewhere where my kids will have a decent education. Somewhere where they dont descriminate towards native americans.
I would prefer to be no more than 20 minutes from town. I need to be fairly close to a hospital because that is where I will be working-no more than 40 minutes.

Somewhere where an apple tree will grow without costing me a fortune for water LMAO

I like small town feel. Where I live now everyone knows everyone.

Any suggestions?

I think Northern California would meet your needs. I am talking about north of Sacramento. The Central Valley there has some of the best farm land in the country, and it is cheaper to live there than Southern California.

And if you or your family members enjoy fishing, there is some of the best fishing in that area.

Unfortunately there are racist people all over, but I know there are many Hispanic people in that area. So I think the area would be better than most.

Yes fishing is great!. Hispanic people usually don't like natives. And I am not good at Spanish so I would prefer to find an area where they speak to me in English first. Unlike here in Southern CA

Well, most Hispanics are at least part Native American. And most of them speak English.

You are down near Mexico, so you have more Spanish speakers there.

Yes I know they are more than half native which is why it bothers me that they act like they are better-not ALL just most. As far as Spanish speakers-yes I am close to the border so almost everyone is from Mexico. The ratio is 95% Mexican and 5% other. But in Oakland most don't speak English either. So I see no difference. I just like not having to put on my resume that I am fluent so I can get a job. And I don't mind Mexicans-I not racist at all-have friends that are Mexican. I just want ENGLISH speaking community to live in

Sarahsunshine-BTW I checked out that link you gave me and spent a little time researching. Very interesting indeed. Where did you hear about that? I still want to move but I think it is a topic more people should be talking about.

I ordered a book from Amazon called The Backyard Homestead-the author said for the most ignorant of gardeners-that's me-buy a bag of fertilizer and 2 tomato plants, slit 2 x's into the bag, plant the tomatoes directly into it and place in sunny spot after pouring water on. If I cant do that well then......I just got it in the mail yesterday and it go's in depth with pictures of land plotting for various sized yards. LOVE IT!
