Anyone living off the land?

Cool Im going to look into Solar cookers too!!!

Well I think we found our state at least. My husband is Native American and his grandmother had hundreds of acres of native trust land that she owned. Well my hubbys mother now owns a large portion of that land and we asked her if we could have a few acres. She said yes!

The land is in Montana and we will not have to pay taxes since it is a native trust. Unfortunately his mother has never surveyed the land since she lives here in California and has never had any interest in it. We don't know where the land is, whether it has water or electricity, if it has roads, or if it is close enough to any small city so we can work.

All we know is that we would have to put our house on it. So it could take several years. Plus I only half trust his mother so I am putting NO money into anything until she has signed the land over to us.

Sounds like an adventure in the making. Best wishes.

Sounds like fun. If you can get it on legal papers, in your name, then go for it. If not............ have you looked at north Alabama? It is limestone hills with a good earth cover, forest and farmlands and clear good water. It is beautiful country and the people are friendly.

Well I am originally from Colorado so I can handle the cold if I have to. The legal documents is exactly what we will be waiting for before we do anything. Without that paper in my hand I will not put a cent into it! Except to pay for the documents of course hehe! How do you know about Alabama since you live Texas? Honestly I wouldn't mind living in the South but I know they are not too friendly with people not from the South. Plus my husband is paranoid of a LOT of states having too many members of the clan. I tell him he is stupid but he insists that we would be in danger. I think I would very much enjoy the south if I wasn't segregated or judged in any way. I had friends from Colorado move to the South and they were treated really badly for being 'outsiders'.

It's probably because I live in the South, but I haven't noticed many problems before. Of course, if you're Hispanic and go to a predominantly German community, you get peered at like some sideshow attraction (my experience in Fredericksburg), but that is in very few towns. I imagine, however, that the more diverse the state/population, the less problems you have. We have lived in south Texas for my entire life (and my parents' lives as well) and haven't dealt with prejudice or heard of people who have dealt with prejudice, simply because we have so many people around here. Winter Texans come here for our mild winters. Houston has a huge Asian population, there is a large African American population, a massive Hispanic population and a large Anglo-American population. I really doubt all these people lived here there entire lives. We are a minority state now, though. For the most part, there are loads of nice people (and don't listen to what people say, Texans can drive...on Texas roads).

...can you tell I'm trying to convince you to move here so I don't have to be the only chicken lady for miles? Hahaha!

See when I say south I am not thinking Texas. I would not move to Texas because it is too close to the climate that we have here. I need more green LOL. I was talking like the original southern united states. Maybe its jus me but I have always considered Texas as a Midwest state, just the southern most Midwestern state.

It's an ongoing joke between my family that other "southern" states aren't truly southern. Comments like, "80 degree winters? Oh yes, what suffering you must face. Come join us throughout our winter/spring/summer/autumn. You'll appreciate your weather once you face your first 100 degree winter." It's always a bit funny.

But I totally get ya. Texas, while interesting, doesn't always equal green, haha! I live in the Valley, which is considered a bit tropical. Half an hour from the ocean, a few minutes from Mexico, and ten hours from everywhere else, haha! I'm not really aware of the landscape of the rest of Texas (it's been years since I took a geography class) but I'm fairly sure drought is statewide. But you'll never say the weather isn't surprising! One day, it'll be 100 degrees. The next, it can be in the 40s and raining. But I've lived here forever and I enjoy surprise hurricanes a little more than average folks, heehee!
