We've ordered chicks from Ideal Poultry a few times over the years and always been exceptionally pleased with them so I figured I'd order an assortment this time since I wanted to add some more birds to the farm. The deal was for 25 so I ordered 25 pullets. I've done that before in the past with one breed such as RIR or sex-links but wanted variety this time. I usually raise them to feathered or on the verge of laying and then sell a few to get down to the number I want to keep. Has anyone ever ordered their assorted heavy pullets before? What did you end up with? Ours should be here Friday *hopefully*. My daughter is very excited and so am I! We both LOVE chickens. :)

If you ordered today I'd suspect the mix will be of those that were on sale (thus in the greatest quantity at the hatchery). They had 5-8 heavy varieties on the list this this afternoon. Ya never know.... but will Friday.

Further, and what you could possibly do in the future, if you call them they will allow you to select the breeds from the sale list and NOT in breed quantities of 25. For instance, I got 5 buff, 5 rir, 5 amerucana, 5 delaware and 5 D'anver last week, all at the sale price. Their system isn't set up for you to make such selection online at the sale price.

I didn't think about asking for specific breeds. I wasn't too partial to any specific breed this time. I couldn't seem to decide on any one breed so I went for this instead. I did see sex-links in black and red, RIR, Barred Rock, Buff Orpingtons on there. I'd love to try Delaware some day but they weren't listed.

Yep. Delawares were on last week and several before but I noticed not today. I'm liking the ones I got from them, friendly and easily handled versus some from McMurray a few weeks ago which are untouchable and have wicked witch of the west green legs. Yellow legs on the Ideal delawares so far. I've got some year old delawares from cackle which are nice birds and the sex links I bred from them are really nice and friendly as well.

I'll definitely have to give them a try one day. I highly doubt they'll be included on this order but maybe we'll get something we haven't had before. We haven't had Australorps or Buff Orpingtons before with the exception of the 2 year old Buff Orp hen we recently got from a friend. She's already a favorite for her mellow personality.

There was nothing on the sale list today that won't be a great bird. The buffs are the golden retrivers of the chicken world so hopefully you'll get a few more. Everybody seems to like them. The amerucanas were on the list and the ones I got last week were super fat and sassy. Blue/green eggs are fun.

I didn't know Ameraucanas could be included in that assortment, so that's nice. We have 7 pullets who should start laying around the beginning of August and 2 are Ameraucana/EEs. 3 are Red Sex-Links and the last 2 are Speckled Sussex. I've had all of those before and liked them. I am anxious to see what we get. :)
