A man called me last night and wanted one of my mammoth donkeys for sale on my website but he wants to trade a 8 yo Haflinger pony for her. He emailed me pics and she's quite pretty. She's currently with a mini donkey as her buddy and I have 20 minis. I have horse experience but never had a Haflinger. She's 13.5 hands and he says good all around.
Anyone have experience with these as far as temperment etc?

Haflingers are gorgeous! I know of one in town that is alone except for a mini horse as a companion. From what I've heard, the Haflingers temperament is great, smooth on the trail. Trail riding is all that's available around here.

Try to get the opportunity to do a few things with her to estimate individual temperament and/or bad habits. Be suspicious, there must be a reason she is available for trade.

Oh yes, Haflingers are great i know a few people down the road with 2 and they are awesome, they are not too big but not to small and great looking.
I think you should go look at it and maybe ride it. It could be the beauty of you farm lol

Have one that is half and she is great as an all around girl. She pulls and hauls and trail rides even ....

They are easy going for the most part. Every horse or pony is like a child or person.... they all have their own *personalities*.

The reason he wants to get rid of her is he rode her for the first time in a parade and it was pouring out, people waving flags, umbrellas, bands, throwing candy to the kids and she was tossing her hand and kind of prancing. It scared him so he got off and walked her the rest of the way. Sounds pretty normal to me if she wasn't used to parades. Apparently he did not try to desensitize her before participating in the parade.

They have great temperaments and are beautiful horses but be sure it is healthy! Don't go trading your Healthy animal for an unhealthy one.
Good Luck and post photos!

They are kind of like the draft horse of the pony world. They are officially consider ponies. But are usually close to small horse size. My BIL trains them. He gets the "untrainable" ones from the Amish. Trains them and sells them back to work on Amish farms. The ones I have seen haven't been the ones I would really want to deal with. But then again, he deals primarily with problem ponies. And yes, they have all been very pretty!

Ooooooohhh, I love mine!!

I got him for free-he was (is) a very dominant horse in the herd. He was at a boarding stable and put in with new horses daily. He liked to tear flesh to show he was the boss! OUCH!

He came home with me and bit my Missouri Fox Trotter's neck, left a chunk of hide hanging and calmed down! Whatever, I guess he got it out of his system. Seriously, they all worked out their pecking order and have settled down.

He is now my best bud-I love this horse and will never get rid of him. Great trail riding horse and just a doll baby. Easy on the eyes too! Good luck with yours!!
