Anyone own a Mantis Tiller?

Thanks everyone for your replies and input. Yes, the Mantis IS very expensive - running for a 2 cycle about $325.00 and a 4 cycle is over $400.00

I've been looking at other brands as well (thanks for mentioning them, appreciate it) and the lowest priced one I think is MTD and another from Lowes - both averaging between $160 - $200.00, respectively.

Still alot of money for such a little tiller - why is it the smaller the item the more $$ it costs?

Keep an eye on craigslist...I just bought one on there for 100 it looks like its only a few years old. I have played with it on cutting up driveway ice and snow worked pretty good for that. Can't wait to use it this gardening season.

I also have a 8hp troy built that I picked up at the dump that someone was getting rid of nothing wrong with it that will do the majority of the tilling the Mantis will be for tilling in crops ending and weeding.

I love my Mantis. It's something I can start by myself without being all girlie and having to call someone to help. It's light enough and easy to handle so I can use it without hurting my back or some other darn fool, old part of my body and it does a really good job. I don't think I would use it on soil that had never been turned over, might be a pretty hard job but I'll bet that little two stroke could cut through it.

It can absolutely cut through sod, it's just tough, and takes a long time. That's why I use the big one for that - but I use the Mantis all the time, not just once every two years. It's well worth the investment.

Yes, we have one. We purchased it several years ago and it starts right up right away. I was amazed that it makes the soil look just like in the commercials. Beautifully tilled soil.

I think you should compare them closely with a Honda.
The 2 Hondas I've had, have done just fine (even if I beat heck out of 'em on rocky ground

). I just couldn't see spending quite a bit more money

and getting a Mantis with a Honda engine.

. . . 4 stroke - the only way to go . . .
