Anyone own red and black broilers?

I have some black and red broilers. I got them from a 'local' hatchery. Not sure where she got her eggs from somewhere in louisana I believe she was saying.

they were ok. I liked them better than CX but most would not. They grew well, they had no health issues other than my daughter forgetting to water them one day in alot of heat we lost some black. We lost no reds. Their taste is good but still mild. I like a 'darker' taste but I love breast meat too.

I like a easy to grow hands off bird. I have a nice size coop and pen but there is a long ramp. When I grew CX they would just lay on the ground and not go in the coop at night. I didn't like that. The blacks and reds both were mobile and cleaner. I let the older ones free range during a couple hours each evening and they get out and look and hunt for bugs and grass. I have a feeder that I fill up once a week. A water as needed. With the CX I found the free feed had them grow a little too fast and they were 'nasty' birds in that they would just lay in their own poop. I know I could clean everyday or go to rationed feeding or what have you but I like chickens I don't have to do much with... So if all I wanted was some meat, yes I'd buy them again or I'd try the freedom rangers or the 'slow' growing CX. However I also would like not to bring in new chicks regular for biosecurity and food security I'd like something I can hatch and raise in whatever size batch I feel like. That's why I"m letting the hens lay and keeping the roo for now. I have found the red hens lay fairly well. The black started laying later and not as often as far as I can tell.

Also I grow for taste. I found I like some breeds better than others and I like slightly older bird taste too. Being able to just keep them around for whenever I feel like getting business done is another benefit. I'm playing with some crosses so hopefully I won't be buying meaties again.

I've set enough eggs for me right now so I'm selling those to my eating egg customers.

We just processed some black broilers today, at 13 weeks. Roosters were all 4.5 to 4.9 lbs, hens 3.2 to 4 pounds. I am pleased with the birds themsleves, raising them was easy enough and we had no health issues. However, at 13 weeks on grower rations they arcawfully small and not well fleshed out. It is unlikely i will do these again. I won't go back to jumbo Cornish " either but will stick with the slow growing Cornish x. They finish plenty big ans have lots of meat. Who knows maybe these little broilers will taste better. I hope so.

I am raising the reds. What percent protein was the grower?

That is a pretty high grower! We will see how my reds turn out. They are double the size of my dual purpose breeds right now that are the same age on the same food. They are about 2.5 weeks old. Where did yours come from? Mine are from Ideal. I am hoping for at least 4 lbs dressed but would love 5 or 6! I am also raising several other breeds at the same time and have a log of it on this site. No pics yet but hope to do them tomorrow. I want to just find out for myself what the best is and quite obsessing over it!! ( cornish x is not an option for me due to free range set up and heat)

Were those weights you posted live or dressed?
