I have some black and red broilers. I got them from a 'local' hatchery. Not sure where she got her eggs from somewhere in louisana I believe she was saying.
We just processed some black broilers today, at 13 weeks. Roosters were all 4.5 to 4.9 lbs, hens 3.2 to 4 pounds. I am pleased with the birds themsleves, raising them was easy enough and we had no health issues. However, at 13 weeks on grower rations they arcawfully small and not well fleshed out. It is unlikely i will do these again. I won't go back to jumbo Cornish " either but will stick with the slow growing Cornish x. They finish plenty big ans have lots of meat. Who knows maybe these little broilers will taste better. I hope so.
That is a pretty high grower! We will see how my reds turn out. They are double the size of my dual purpose breeds right now that are the same age on the same food. They are about 2.5 weeks old. Where did yours come from? Mine are from Ideal. I am hoping for at least 4 lbs dressed but would love 5 or 6! I am also raising several other breeds at the same time and have a log of it on this site. No pics yet but hope to do them tomorrow. I want to just find out for myself what the best is and quite obsessing over it!! ( Cornish x is not an option for me due to free range set up and heat)
