I went out last night to put the ducks in their pen for the night, and found my ancient old Cayuga in terrible shape. At first, I thought she was dragging an egg somehow. No, it was internal organs. She had a huge hole under her abdomen. Three of these things fell out that I have never seen in any drawings of duck anatomy. They looked kind of like an egg without the hard shell. They busted, and were filled with pale yellow, runny goop. And her intestines were coming out too. I put her down.

Ever seen anything like that?

My buff Orpington hen used to lay shellless eggs just like the ones you described but the film on hers where not broken I thought it was just because sometimes she would lay so many eggs she lacked the nutrients for the shells on them all. Don't know about the hole though

I don't know specifically about ducks, but I know chickens have hundreds of immature eggs inside them. So it sounds like what you saw was immature eggs. And it sounds like a predator got hold of her. But the strange thing is it didn't finish her off.

Upon further reflection, yes--I think they were immature eggs with no shell. Just membrane, but everything else came out with them. Yack. She liked to squeeze into some old chicken cages to lay eggs, so I'm betting she came across something sharp in there.
