Unfortunately I was unable to convince my boyfriend that culling roos would be worth the hassle for ANY breed. We can't keep any roosters for breeding so feed store/hatchery chicks are perfectly adequate for us. I just want something more exotic that is also a great layer. He's just a lot more sensitive and can't stand the thought of having to cull any birds (whereas I see it as natural and necessary part of raising chickens, and after all, we do eat meat anyway). Add to all that that we have limited space and can only have three more birds by city ordinance, and it's just not feasible to raise more than three chicks in hopes of getting three females, and I do want to raise together as chicks all the ones we're actually going to keep. So... we've settled on Hamburgs, which no one has available until spring. Best of luck in your search! Please do let me know how it goes as we are still open to other possibilities.
