Anyone setting eggs starting July 15 -July 22?

I can tell when a chick has died from candling it and rolling it. A live chick kinda moves against the rolling but a dead one with flopishly move along with the rolling motion does this make sense? You can see the lifeless flop of the chicks body.in the past I kept the eggs I thought were dead in until they smelled letting me know I was right. But yes always make sure before you throw them out.

Hey everyone!

I set my batch on the 18th, may I join you?

I've got 12 eggs in right now.
4 Frizzle Standard Cochins
1 Lavender Orpingtion
2 Easter Egger
1 Lavender Ameruacana
4 Milie Fleur D'uccle

So far, I only see 2-3 clear eggs [though I haven't candled nearly as much this batch as I did my last batch...which, subsequently probably has something to do with why I see so many moving babies this time around!] My last hatch rate was pitiful at 36%.

This time, I set them and pretty much forgot about them [other than checking the temperatures 2x daily] I've pretty much left them alone. Hopefully I'll have a better success this time around. All but 2 of my silkie babies from the last batch have gone to their new homes and I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to keep the 2 that are left....I'm just not sure I want a flock of bantams...but we'll see.

I think, after this hatch I'm going to start looking for some silver laced wyandottes...they're so so so pretty :)

How's everyone else's hatch going?
Welcome :)
My hatch is not going very well, we are looking at a 25% hatching rate.
Oh well, it cannot be helped.

Wow, a lot of people are on day 13, including myself. Anyone else?

At least by day13, we're more than halfway there...

I can't believe that I'll be locking down this weekend! I'm so nervous, so much can still go wrong in the meantime.

Silkiemelon, sorry about your poor hatch rate...do you know what happened?

I just candled my eggs, as it is day 12 for me.
Another one died.
And to think I began with 12 eggs!

If this was a competition, I'm pretty sure I would be in the running for the worst hatching rate.
Ugg.

And then there were 3.
Are you positive it died? so many ppl here i notice think one died if it doesnt move and open it to a live chick!! or did it stink?

Well, I ordered my hatching eggs from Georgia (and I'm in washington), and the breeder told me I'd be taking a gamble because of the heat.
But I took my chances. And well, my gamble ended up being bad. I went from 12-3 in 12 days! Most were clear, 3 or so got blood rings. It really was unfortunate, but it was my fault for getting eggs in this heat. Oh well, I was only going to keep 2 chicks anyway!
How are yours doing?

Yah.I was sure.
About 7 months ago when I hatched eggs, I threw out a day 11 egg I swore was dead, and it was ALIVE. I never felt so horrible in my entire life! It was just because it was so porous, I couldn't see anything.
So now I'm super careful before I throw out. This one I believe died around day 9, and I candled it on day 12 to be sure, and it was dead. No movement, blood ring, and there was a faint odor none of my other eggs had.
I'm glad I was cautious though. No one wants to kill a chick!

I'm on day 17 (set eggs on Saturday July 14th in the afternoon) -
Started with 6 chicken eggs - just a barnyard mix w/ RIR roo.
This is my first hatch ever. Candled (and removed) one that never started (non-fertile) - never smelled but was still clear on day 12.
The rest are along for the ride... Hoping for the best obviously. :) Down to 5 due on Saturday.
One small white egg, and 4 brown ones... ha ha... very scientific;)
I'm very excited, and I hope I can have the patience to not step in and help if these chicks are taking a long time to hatch this weekend.
Good luck to us all!

I am also on day 13. I didn't realize there were so many here. I have 13 swedish flower hens and 5 barnyard X that will most likely be RIR. One of the RIR looks bad, and 2 of the SFH, but like everyone else I still have them in til they stink. I wanted to wait till day 10 to candle but only made it to day 8. I had one definitely culled and set out of the bator, but after I finished candling the rest of them I took another look and it was moving. I will take another look tomorrow.
I am still dry but my aircells look fine. It's way humid here in mid TN. This looks to be a good hatch so far...can't wait to get more fuzzies!
:D

I LOVE swedish flower chickens! If I didn't have silkies, I would have those!
Please post pics of them when they hatch!!

Well, we candled our eggs and got mixed results. The Cochins seem to be doing fairly well, but others are questionable. I will candle them again on Friday to see how we are doing. I took some pictures and wrote about the full update on our family farm blog. You can check it out here: http://lallybrochfarms.blogspot.com/2012/07/ryans-chicks.html

I hope the eggs we marked as questionable, mature! This is so exciting, but nerve wracking, too!
