It's sort of Buck Rogers meets Star Trek, meets 20,000 legues under the sea, meets GOTH, meets Jules Vern Time Machine and hellboy.

You take an ordinary thing, like a computer mouse, and retro engineer it to look like it was made back in the 1700 or 1800 and steam powered. Lots of wood, brass work etc... Really Cool.

I'm starting to get into it, I'm making a ray-gun out of wood, vaccuum tubes, pipe fittings and hoses.

Do a search for streampunk on the net, Lots of cool pictures.

I've done several dresses in style. One required sewing on 34 belts, and the loan of a commercial machine for a few hours. From a sewing standpoint, best thing is no zippers.

I love steampunk! It looks so neat

But I don't have the stuff to make anything out of. Wouldn't really know where to start

I'm sure if I were to go plundering in all the junk my dad keeps bringing home, I'd find some things to use or tear apart. I've seen a lot of beautiful steampunk jewelry on etsy.com and deviantart.com

I think the common theme is brass, gears, tubing, fittings and wood. From there let your mind go nutz.
MANY examples of ray guns are the "super soakers" plastic waterguns, painted, with a few extra brass doo dads here and there and BANG! instant Steampunk! I've seen a few Nurf guns converted to steampunk (some even still have the "nerf" logo clearly visible.

Think about the Wild Wild West with Will Smith...That big spider---steampunk, the bad guy's wheel chair---steampunk, Selma hayek's super hot clothes----steampunk.

Also Hellboy, that robot dude with all the gears, goggles, etc...are prime examples.
