Anyone train a therpy dog before?

If you don't have a permanent disability that places you under the protection of the Americans with Disabilities Act, you will not have public access rights with your dog. That doesn't mean you can't train him to perform service functions and put him to work. It does mean that you can't take him everywhere. No matter what his training, he is legally not a service dog unless he's actively working for a legally disabled person.

The previous poster is correct, a dog that must brace for weight bearing must be ABSOLUTELY physically sound, and MATURE. That means at least two years of age for a Lab, maybe older if he's a slow maturer.

To put a person's weight on a skeletally compromised or growing young dog can permanently damage him. Far too many service dogs break down early because of these physical stresses.

Retrieving, otoh, is something you can start using as soon as it's solid.

Don't lie and take your pup into stores. You can ask for permission, but don't imply or state that he is something other than what he is. It makes things harder for people who must have their service dogs, and this kind of abuse is the reason why ADA rules are being revisited and clamped down even now.

I am training a 14 week old Malamute right now for service work.
he goes everywhere with us,
Including every Chicken Sawp there is available.Great place to socialize a big dog, he is one of the Giants which will Top weight out at 130 lbs.
His temperment is spot on for service training. very laid back and mellow, except for when he is being a sassy brat.

I have a seizure disorder and grand daughter is diabetic.
already he alerts me when her sugar gets high and low, and he hit on a seizure with me the other night, wakiing me to it before it got full blown so I could get the medication taken.
I was very shocked as he wasnt being trained to hit on the seizures yet.
I am thinkiing this dog is going to be easy to train and will pass his tests with flying colors. he has had very little training in the 5 weeks we have had him , he is coming by most hits naturally on his own.

That is awesome!

How do you get a dog to do the blood sugar? I love to have a dog that does that when my blood sugar drops. I have hypoglycemia and it drives me crazy. Im been tested for diabetes but my blood sugar is always stable when tested. I "love" explaining to my boss that if i don't eat in a couple minutes i'm gonna pass out. It just drops on me. Nice and scary. I know when it starts to drop sometimes but not much anymore. Thinking of getting tested again.

Am i correct in thinking unless i have permission from the store owners i can not take a therapy dog in right? They don't have the same rights as service dogs as far as i know.

If your training a service dog can you take it in public?

Sorry so many questions i just want to do this right.
