Anyone up for a Hatchalong?

Pics
MSheets here are the pictures:

If I want to add more eggs I will need to adjust the second shelf so it goes higher then the emu eggs on the top shelf. As you can see where the shelf pegs are in contrast to the eggs, the shelf will be sitting ontop of the eggs. Was thinking of using the empty water bottle halves, but they might be too big so think I will do a wooden one. This will give me room for 4 more Emu eggs.

Oooh thank you Yoda! So you like it as well if not better than the 5000? I like the clear shelves & I see what you mean with the shelf notches but like you said you could probably make something up for it to work. Is the inside of the bator any bigger than the other one? One last question, did it come with 2 shelves or did you buy the 2nd one? Mine came with 2 but when advertised it says they only come with one.

Mine came with 2 shelves. I never owned the 5000, someone told me to wait til the new one came out. I did send the seller an email cause the water tray in mine is broken but so far no response. Fedex seemed to throw the box around cause it did look a little beat up when it arrived. Even with the constant fan on the temp is still about 96.5 - 96.9 on the floor where the eggs are and around 97.1 - 97.3 where the eggs are on the shelf. I need to build a small stand for the second shelf to see what the temp is at the top. The unit is set at 100 degrees but only stays there for about a minute then goes to 99. why it does not hold at the set temp I do not know.

Opened my five remaining eggs tonight using the drill hole in the end everyone is mentioning here and none were fertile

Out of 10 eggs not one was fertile - not a one

Sad news......
My two little guys didn't make it. Today was day 54 and I hadn't heard anything from 1 in 3 days and the other in 2 days. I drilled a hole in the first one after the first day of no sounds. I couldn't see enough to tell if it was alive. This morning I decided to make the hole bigger. Once I knew the first one was dead I decided to check the second one a well. (I need the incubator) Both babies were in the correct position to pip the egg shell. They also had absorbed the yolk sac and were fully developed. I don't know what caused them to die. Maybe I waited too long to drill the hole? Did they suffocate?

I am very sorry.....That is an awful feeling. I have second guess myself too. All we can do is the best we can at that moment. I learn something new with each hatch that I am involved with. I drilled mine out even though I was told not to by most. I wish there was more that I could do to make you feel better. Take care

Aww chassquirrel, I'm so sorry to hear that!! I wish so much that didn't happen, reading what happened I'm not sure there was anything you could've done since like in the previous post, you're not advised to help. A lot of times you can do more harm than good, I'm guessing they did suffocate in their shells but I have no idea what caused them not to even pip, maybe the shell was to thick & they aren't strong enough to break it? I cant think of anything that you couldve done that would've caused it...again I'm terribly sorry ):

Sorry ChasSquirrel. I was worried sick that I would get into a help/not help situation. I am so glad I didn't have to make that choice. You did your best.

Mary

Sorry ChasSquirrel

I have lost one egg on my hatch yesterday and another egg which is due in couple of days probably is not going to make it . We do what we can, but the nature takes the course. Be strong, I am trying to do the same.

aww sorry ChasSquirrel..
I don't remember what kind of incubator you were using.. but there could be a few reasons why they didn't make it out of the shells..

carbon dioxide poisoning would be my first guess.. and even if you did drill into the shells there would be no guarantee that your incubator allows for enough air exchange

drilling into the shells is best for eggs that you have no idea if the parents have had a history of chicks not hatching due to lack of oxygen (like eBay eggs) .. or for eggs where you do know there has been an issue in the past with the shells being too thick/dense

in a normal hatch where the parents have never had any problems with chicks dead in the shells it's best to leave them alone because there really isn't a reason to drill.. however if you are using an air tight incubator or one that doesn't allow for much air exchange then even if there are no past problems the chicks can still die since they end up breathing carbon dioxide.. one way to tell if your bator has a problem with it is to look at the area around the chicks eyes.. if it's very red when a chick does hatch it's usually a sign of carbon dioxide poisoning.. just not severe enough to have killed that individual chick
even in a good incubator you can still have an issue with it if there are a lot of eggs (especially ones close to hatch) since each of those eggs needs oxygen and would be using it from whatever is available in the incubator

the other thing that could have caused chicks dieing so close to hatch would be dietary issues with the parents resulting in weak chicks or bacterial infection

are you planning on trying again?
