LOL chas I had button qual cotournix too, try chick feed crumbles, the ones you feed the baby chicks, if cannot find these and you have a hand mill, put regularchicken feed, they feed on that, give them electrolites, and the crumbles wet them a little bit, ah dont let them get soaked wet, the feets, they dye, put some rocgravel on the water!!, they sound when males sing like little cats, they are beaytifull!!! love this kinda creatures,I have 80 of them!!!

No, I don't have miniature emus... LOL These are my new Coturnix Quail. 2 out of 3 eggs hatched. I am so glad I have two. Now, my question is: What in the world do I feed them?

we have a Pyr.. big goofy girl so long as you're family... strangers have to watch out though.. also have a german shepherd, standard poodle and a big dopey white lab

Irine, your dogs are amazing & what a gorgeous breed! I'm a huge dog person & have always taken pride in my knowledge of all the different breeds but I have to say I have never heard of CAS's. Your site is great, I'm still looking it over lol. Pretty please update me on here of your dam's progress also, I hope the puppies & her go through delivery ok.
Ok I'm kind of embarrassed for asking but what is sounding? It's the certain noise you hear when you tap on the egg, right? My eggs are now on day 33, what should I be looking for? Two days ago I swore I saw 3 of them wiggle but the last 2 days I can't seem to confirm what I saw, I've checked them twice both days. I need to look back & see what methods I can use for day 33 eggs, so far I haven't been able to hear anything with my stethoscope & if I ever do I'll let you all know.

I'm 99% certain egg D is bad, it's the only one keeping the smell outside the incubator & it seems to be getting stronger daily...should I remove it from the bator? Is it possible for it to harm the other eggs in the bator that are developing by bacteria or something? If told it's best to remove it I was thinking of drilling a small hole in the aircell end, surely if it's rotten I'll be able to clearly confirm it by smelling through the hole then if there's a chick would it be ok with the small hole?

You'll hear plenty in the last week of incubation with that stethoscope! On day 33 all you can really do is watch for the wiggle.. on day 39 start the tap testing

if egg D is bad I would pull it..
if you're not 100% sure it's the bad one.. do you have another bator you can move it to?
day 33 is a little early to drill a hole (in my opinion) .. but you could always experiment and see... just be warned.. if the egg is rotten and is building up pressure it would be better to try drilling in while wearing old clothes... and outside.. lol

when you tap on an egg with a solid piece of metal (like a drill bit) and the sound changes from the dull lower pitch "THUNK" to a higher (non resonating) pitch "tink" or "tack" sound .. then the egg has "sounded" and is usually moved to the hatcher

Lol.. I had one hatch out last night too.. and several more eggs to go..
I raise coturnix (have well over 100 adults at the moment.. but a bunch need to go to freezer camp).. for mine I feed game bird starter (28% protein.. but higher in protein is always better).. I grind mine up to a fine powder in a coffee mill for the first week or so.. they seem to do a lot better on the powdered feed and eat a lot more of it

in a pinch you CAN use chick starter.. though it's pretty low in protein.. I know some people over in the quail section of the forum feed it.. but it's usually recommended that you feed game bird starter if you can find it.. turkey starter will also work well since it's pretty high in protein

they do need to eat a lot sooner than chicken chicks.. within 24 hours of hatch since they don't have the yolk reserve to live off of like other chicks have

I just checked with TSC and they said their Game Bird Starter is 24% protein. I asked if they sold by the pound but do not. Didn't think they would. They did say they have 5 lbs medicated chick starter. I wouldn't want to use that, would I? My quails keep 'crying'. Is that normal? I have some water (in a bird cage waterer) and chick starter in there little bitty cage and they do peck at it. Also, what in the world do I feed the Emus once they make their debut?

we don't feed our quail medicated feed and it's not really recommended for quail to have medicated.. though there are a few members here who couldn't get anything but medicated feed.. so you just have to work with whatever you can get locally.. lol

just like any other chicks.. when they cry it means they are either too hot.. too cold .. or hungry/lonely.. so you pretty much need to observe them and see what all the fuss is about.. you may want to make sure they know where their water is and their food.. and be careful.. quail can drown themselves very easily.. so I use the little quail waterers that you can get from TSC (narrow red base with the white plastic jar).. if I have too many quail and not enough of the waterers I use a chick waterer with marbles in it so they can't fall in and drown

for my emus I started them all out on vitamins added to their water.. I have several different kinds (Prime, Save-a-chick, and Avia Charge 2000) that I rotate between
for feed I started them out on chopped kale and collard greens.. added in some grated carrot and chopped apple after a day.. then started adding in a mix of chick starter, layer crumbles with a smidge of gamebird starter added in for the extra nutrition.. after a week on the greens and chicken feed I started adding in rabbit pellets (had to break them up a little since mine are pretty big pellets)
They still prefer their veggies.. but they also eat the crumbles and pellets

I figured the more variety I could add in the better off they would be since the nutritional requirements for emus are still being debated.. what we do know is that they need lower protein, B vitamins and calcium

as they get older I will be dropping out the chick starter and the gamebird starter and going with veggies as well as a mix of layer pellets and rabbit pellets
