Anyone up for a Hatchalong?

Omg ChasSquirrel that's great! 5 local eggs is what I started with & now have 4 wigglers on day 42. That's pretty near they're already 2 weeks along, that's time you don't have to wait! That's also funny that lady knows so little about emus, but good for you lol. I know a guy around here that's the same way, he sells turkey, geese, chicken, guinea & peacock eggs for the same price as a dozen at the store, he doesn't know or think or care (one of those) to charge more, he says he feels like robbing people if he charges more than $3.00 for a dozen eggs...

Thanks. I saw your Emu hatch page, and saw that you had set your freebie eggs the same day I did with mine. I am glad that I have someone to hatchalong with! I had copied your weighing dates on my calender. Thanks for posting that.

glad it helped.. you have to keep us updated when you do weigh ins!

the local woman who gave me the old emu eggs is the same way.. she has her adults but said she really doesn't know anything about incubating eggs.. and isn't really interested in making a ton of money off of them (especially off of any eggs that she knows are old).. when she posted her auction for the fresh eggs from her birds she tried to make it for only a couple of days so she could ship them out right away to ensure they were fresh as possible .. but she had a problem with the auction when it submitted so it had them listed for a week.. which is not what she intended... so she's been on the phone several times with eBay to try to get it fixed. When I checked on it last it was canceled.. so I think she gave up trying to get it worked out before she had to go out of town.

the old eggs she gave me had belonged to a friend of hers.. since she had to go out of town she told me that her daughter will let me know if the emus lay any more eggs while she's gone.. they are all freebies.. so I promised her a carved egg in exchange

I still don't know what to do about my 2 eggs losing a lot less weight, especially C. I've moved them all around the bator but they always lose the same amount so I don't think it's the humidity since eggs A, B & D always lost the same amount also regardless of their position in the bator...I'm clueless. C & E wiggle just as much as the other 2 if not more do they seem to be just as healthy as them so what could cause them to lose so much less? Do I need to do something
closer to hatch?

Also Yinepu, I noticed several of your eggs hatched after losing mid 80 something grams with one in the 70s, 2 of mine have lost in the 80s, does that mean they're close to hatching? Or should I look at the percentage instead? I can't remember what percentage your eggs were at...

The 'Lady' brought me five emu eggs today. Some are quite dirty with just plain old dirt. What is the recommended way to clean them? I have used a dry brush to get most of the dirt off but some is still not coming off. Any suggestions?

I heard you're not supposed to actually wash egg's & that it'll decrease hatch ability so I always brush or pick away what dirt I can. That being said I saw where Yinepu washed her speckled eggs with some kind of soap & I trust any advice I get from her since she seems to research everything she does & knows what she's talking about so look back & see what she used, she'll probably reply. :)

Go by the percentage weight loss.. since smaller eggs will lose less weight in grams than heavier eggs will

for the eggs that have lost too little weight.. right now they are still in the acceptable range.. remember eggs should lose 12 to 15% of their weight +/- 1.2%
even if egg "C" only loses 1 more percent of it's weight in the next week it will still come very close to the acceptable weight for the low end
Most of mine were within the 12 to 15% range.. the one major exception I had was an egg that lost 17.27%.. he hatched with a bloody navel and was eager to get a drink of the electrolyte solution .. He was also the least "sturdy" of the bunch at hatch and I ended up taping his legs for less than 24 hours as a precaution... today you can't tell him from the others as far as health or activity level

Just dry brush them.. chances are that if bacteria was going to enter the eggs it would have done so as soon as they were laid and were beginning to cool.. if you have any Oxine you can give them a good spritz with that and let them air dry.. otherwise just dry brush and don't worry about it too much

I just spritz all of mine with Oxine.. it's safe for hatching eggs.. had I collected them myself I wouldn't have bothered with that.. but not knowing how much they have been handled I spritz all shipped eggs with Oxine now to help kill off any surface bacteria..

i even spray down the incubators right after each chick hatches.. just remove the eggs long enough to spray things down then place them back in.. the small amount of increased humidity only lasts for a couple of hours so it's no concern to the eggs that are still incubating

The nice thing about Oxine is you can spray the birds right in the face if they have respiratory issues (not the 2 part Oxine.. just Oxine and distilled water.. my understanding is that the 2 part one is hazardous if breathed in) and it helps with their respiration.. completely safe to breathe so long as you just use regular Oxine and distilled water
