I know the norm is the 1/2 x 1/2 grid, I saw a video where a guy was using the 1/2x1, seemed to be fine. Maybe create even less chance of stuck poo and a few less wire joints to create possible nicks. Also, anyone use the coated wire versus just the metal? Seems like it would be easier on their feet.

I've built 4 cages with that stuff. I'm trying to get another cage done this week. It's a thicker gauge wire, and it doesn't sag in the middle like the 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth does. One cage has a slanted floor and all the eggs roll to the front.

Yea I don't like how the 1/2 grid struggles to stay flat, I'm sure the 1/2 x 1 and a little higher gauge would help. Have had lots of issues with bumble foot lately

Hm, I just put 1/2 by 1/2 on a new pen I'm making. How often does the poop just sit on the wire? I was hoping it would fall through for the most part. Do you really have problems with it?

I'm 6 months in with my first batch, and have just recently started seeing some bumble foot. Very rarely will poop sit on the wire but I do see it every now and then, it usually ends up falling through eventually. Also some design flaws in my coop have led to the edges having some build up. I have no desire to surgically remove the little bulb in there or even have to pick poo scabs off their feet.
So I'll try a sturdier 1/2 x 1

a sand bath , box of wood shavings and sand , will give them the pleasure of cleaning themselves especially their feet they don't tend to rev up and do the moon dance on wire , give em a scratch box dust bath an they will all be competing to get on the dance floor. they like to peck at grit as well. I don't have foot problems with said technique , dusting also gets rid of scaly mite at the early stage . Give it a try put a dish pan of sand in there and watch them rock. Wire, deep litter, each has pros and cons, their behavior and health will tell you direct. I got a plan for a box that keeps most sand in it and is a little easier for them to dive into .I use a 1/2 by 1/2 heavy poly grid for the quail the heavy 1/2 by 1 for rabbits, the quail are on their feet more ,move more , and sh**t every where making it a slosh for their comfort the rabbits go in one place only and tend not to move around or be on there feet like those little p*ckrs the quail, who tend to not stay still too much .The plastic is easy to clean not hard hard and doesn't rust. The doo seems to disappear through the mesh easy enough, to the tray below.Still recommend a dust scratch bath though for their health and happiness.

Yes, I would definitely have a sandbox too. My current quail are on solid ground with sand. It works out pretty good, but I wanted to use wire for this pen. I'm hoping they won't get a build up of poop.

I almost picked up so 1 x 1\2 the other day. I wasn't sure if it would work out or not. Think I'll try it out on the next cage i build.

At what age do you put in the sand box?
