I use the DE (thinking i was using to little) and the flies are nasty. Of course the extreme heat isnt helping im sure! So i was just wondering if anyone else uses flytraps in their coops?

I did for about 2 weeks. The flytraps smell like a dead body and at first I thought the chickens were sick...if you get up close and sniff the traps, they dont stink. They just make the whole area stink.

Then my DH knocked it down and *SPLLLOOOOORT* there was dead fly goo everywhere. He had to throw himself down on it to prevent the chickens from eating the dead flies & nastiness. Like he was throwing himself on a grenade.

I got a shovel and lllaaaaauuuugggghhed.

Too funny! I will try them, it can't hurt! I will just make sure the chickens cant get to them!

Thanks for your response!

I put the fly traps with the wet stuff just outside the coop, where none of the chickens can bump it.
I tried putting a sticky trap way up in the top of the coop, but my Delaware rooster decided it didn't match the decor or something and he wrestled it into oblivion- it took several of his tail feathers and butt feathers as it went down, but he got it!

The rooster is a chicken hero too!

I was interested to hear that flytraps can be quite smelley, as that seems to be what's happening with the ones my dad put up in cur run. I would be curious to hear what other use for fly control, in case there's an option that might work better.

We use the big bag fly traps but have them AWAY from the run (about 50 feet). Those things attract flies from a pretty good area and you want to draw them AWAY from the chickens, not into the run. I now this thread is old, but kudos to the guy that jumped on the dropped fly bag - that took some big ones! :)
