I want to start free ranging some of my birds, and I have the usual mix of predators (foxes, coyotes, etc.), but the biggest problem is the neighborhood German Shepherd

, never on a leash and always roaming around. I'm only going to free range during the daytime, and I wanted to know if anyone used regular three strand high tensile electric wire to keep daytime predators out and to keep chickens in.

I can't afford to fence in my entire 1 acre backyard, and I'm hoping a regular electric fence will help mitigate some of the dangers of free ranging. At night, they will be locked inside their chicken pens inside the barn. They also have a fenced in run, but they've turned this to dirt and clearly love being out on the grass and amongst the trees.

Well one strand of electric will keep MY dog in fine.

But we had a Boxer that lived nextdoor for a while that would run through it to break the wires and stop the shock. I would be afraid of relying on strands of electric ONLY because of that experience. I'm also not sure that it would keep your birds in either.
Electric wire to reinforce a good fence is probably your best bet on the GSD predator, if it's even necessary. My newer dog doesn't know the electric fence, but he never tries to escape from regular fence. Some dogs do respect the fence as a barrier (others, do not

) If you clip the wing feathers you can probably keep your birds in a 5ft fence pretty well. (I rarely have escapes anymore, with both wings clipped)

my chickens stay inside a four foot fence when 'free ranging' w/o escaping... depends on the birds. Mine are all duel propose and there's plenty to tear up in the yard. To really really protect them I need hawk deterents and electric strand.

Had a dig that would ground out electric wire by digging in two places away from the wire so that the dirt touched the wire in two places, then she would dig between the two mounds...
