Speaking of milkweed seeds and plants, I want to share a tidbit about them that my mom recalled from her early days at the one room schoolhouse here in Maine. One day each week was out in the feild day, carry a sac and scouring the countryside for milkweed pods. They not only found a lot of bugs and stuff, but the milkweed pods that they collected went to the manufacturer of life jackets. These pods not to be compared with new aged materials for life preservers, was known for its air packed and rugged nature to help in war time.
If you are allergic to Latex, try to avoid this plant, the white milky discharge is a form of raw latex.
Also the use of the fuzzy parts of the seeds were used in the early 1900's for forming backgrounds in pictures that were made by patients at the Hebron TB Sanitorium. They would weave tray type baskets with a thin wood back, pod silk, and then added butterflies with other pressed flowers. These two trays I have are a pride and joy that has been passed down through the generations.
Have a great day!!!
