Anyone Want This Job??

That was one of the most horrifying thing I've seen in a while. I have a serious problem with heights, which was FUN (not!) when in Army ROTC I had to rappel off a 100 ft tower. I was terrified witless, but I went down the fast way and nearly passed out as soon as my feet hit the grass. So being petrified at 100 feet means that I could never go higher than that (heck, I only went that high because I had a sergeant screaming at me the entire time!).

When people asked, I told them the only fun part of that job was not doing it anymore. You really can get used to it, so you are only nervous, not terrified. But then you go on vacation or don't climb for a few days, after a weekend and then you have to go back up.

It all starts over. At the top, did your thighs get really tight? My legs would always act like they didn't want to get going (they were the smart part of my body, apparently) and my knees were difficult to bend.

The camera, bouncing around on his helmet, made for the dizzying effect.

How much does it pay?

Yes, I would do it.

If you fall, it's about 14 seconds before impact. If you had a BASE jumping rig, it would be all fun, except for avoiding guywires.

We charged a dollar and a bit, per foot. Short towers actually paid better because you could do several in one day. Antenna farms frequently had a lot of towers within walking distance so we'd make a map of the farm so we didn't start climbing the same tower twice. You try to never do that. You get to the top and see your initials on the tag... from today. "Hey Larry! Wanna hear something funny? You know how you said we should NEVER make the mistake of climbing the same tower twice, on the same day, accidentally? Well... you're gonna laugh!"

You should have had a sign off, at the bottom of the tower.

Some of the owners treated any marks on the tower as "tagging". Like graffiti. Mapping worked and we only made that mistake once. After the mistake. Map. Before the mistake, "Oh, we'll remember." I only remember it being a medium high tower, so over 200'.
