I just got some on eggbid.
They ship this week. Theyre only a week old. I've always wanted Canadas, and im psyched! But...while I was asking questions on the phone with the breeder, he said something that sparked my curiousity...he said to feed them chick starter till they start getting in their wing feathers...and THEN switch completely to grass clippings and chicken scratch, because the starter at that point will be too high of protein and will cause slipped wing (ok, ok, in ducks and geese i know it's called angel wing)? Im just curious...IS THAT THE RIGHT THING TO DO FOR BABY CANADAS? MY african and tufted roman when i had them always ate flock raiser or chick starter with the chickies and they turned out with okay wings. Is it that different with wild geese? Also...I live in an area with next to no grass available...we have... pine needles
LOL. So could I substitute timothy hay for grass? Or do I need to make a run to petsmart and get that "cat grass" stuff that grows in a little planter???
Also...I had the option of havin them pinioned or not...Since my waterfowl pen has a panel of chainlink (to keep raccoons from having a good time in there
) over it, its 100% escape proof. I decided not to have them pinioned. I figure worst case scenario I'll just clip wings in the fall. Did I make the right decision? Call me stupid...but I just couldnt bear the thought of havin their little wingtips clipped off!
They're not cacklers or giants, they're just an inbetween strain of typical sized canadas.
Anything else I need to know about special care? What about personality characteristics? What are your canadas like? I birdsat a pair of juevenile cacklers a couple years ago for a friend...but they werent handled much and were more interested in the lettuce they got as treats then people.
