Hi I'm so happy to have found a site that is so interesting and informative! I'm new to the game so will soak up everything geese! I am in Austria, in a country town Upper Austria. I moved here last year from Australia after marrying an Austrian sweetheart! We have a large garden and have tenanted the lower part of the house so there is a young family. We have chickens we had ducks but they were taken by Martens simply because we lacked knowledge on keeping other poultry. We don't seem to have foxes our problem really is deer. The Martens were attracted by the free roaming ducks but otherwise haven't tried to get in to the chickens. We don't have snakes and we have a good mouser cat. I'm not prepared to lose another animal off the property so am going to research everything first. We live on the edge of a forest and have a river running about 300 metres away and get pesky deer that invade our salad patch so I decided to get geese I've no idea if they will scare them off at any rate I just love the idea of geese. I'm in the process of designing a house for them I've looked at so many ideas my head spins but basically I want to be able to use the poop for fertiliser so thought I might make it on stilts with a large tray underneath to remove droppings and whatnot, and the floor a sturdy wire mesh not sure would this make the hutch too cold? I'd welcome any advise or constructive criticism on raising geese etc we will probably get more ducks because the tenants really loved them but they will go into the chicken pen!
Our winters don't seem to be so bad so I'm not too worried but I'd like them to be happy little vegemites! I'd like to know more about keeping them occupied, breeding them and how to care for the goslings, are they good parents? I have found a breeder (miles away..) Who has a mixed flock so we need to take a trip down I'm nervous since I'm not sure of what I'm looking at and have not so much info on sicknesses they may have. I also want a gander and two female geese how can I tell? Seriously I have so many questions and I'm afraid not many people speak English for me to really find out here.
Many thanks
