I have a 23-24 week old hen who was acting normal 3 hours ago. I came to check on them just now and she was standing oddly to me. I put her in my lap and she had poo in tail feathers but poo looked normal. She is staying still with tail up more than normal maybe. Wondering if she might be about to lay her first egg but worried also that something is wrong. Can anyone give me any feedback or thoughts?

Update she laid a soft shell egg. It’s her first egg. I have oyster shells and calcium in the run. Also on layer feed. Is this just a fluke as a first egg or is there something I need to do?

Is she also a lot redder in face, comb, and wattles? Possibly squatting? Visiting heat boxes and “playing house “?

It’s not unusual to see young pullets doing this when they start laying; or at any rate, mine did. A bit of “what on Earth is going on inside of me”, maybe.

I’d check her crop in the evening and then the following morning to verify that she’s eating well (the evening check should be full) and digesting (the morning check should be empty.)

Very common for new layers. My Easter Egger, who could almost be a twin of your girl, laid a thin shelled incomplete egg first and a no-shell later the same day, and then she started cranking out perfect eggs.
