At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the purpose of joining the APA or ABA?

Thanks!

Raising, showing, and sellling purebred poultry. The APA and ABA publish (and maintain) the rules and promote the pure breeds.

Advantages include earning points in the breed and variety for having winning show birds, achieving a Master exhibitor or Breeder is a great distinction and personal achievement. It also demonstrates that the individual is interested in adhereing to the standards of perfection in their breeding pens ans seeks to promote purebred poultry. Go to the websites read the mission statements for teh organizations.

What type of tests/health certificates will I have to get in order to show my birds? And would it just be for the show chickens or would I have to get all the chickens on my property checked out?

In Ohio you only have to Pullorum test the birds going to the (Ohio) show unless stated otherwise.
If you plan to do a lot of showing you may want to get NPIP tested. If you want to ship eggs/birds then you need to be NPIP test.
