I live in a 625 sq ft apartment and would desperately like to store root veggies over the winter. I'm expecting roughly 50 pounds of potatoes, and maybe carrots and onions as well. My problem is that my apartment is small and I don't really have anywhere "cold" to put anything. We have the option of storage at my parents' house but that's 20 minutes away.
I have an idea, actually, but I'm not sure how it'll work. My AC is not well insulated and I get a breeze from it in the winter. I get the breeze the rest of the year, too, but it's not a problem unless it's winter. I usually put a couple towels over it and then back my couch up to it so the breeze isn't so much a breeze as a "cold spot." Would a couple wooden or plastic crates between the AC and the couch be effective as cold enough, you think? Maybe with a towel thrown over to prevent the drafts from getting to the rest of the place?
I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, if that makes a difference.
