Hi I’m a newbie wanted to say hi and welcome to! Lol I love all the photos of your chicks! Im still deciding on what chickens I want. So I have none as of yet! It’s a big deal ! I want dócil friendly and gentle chickens for my back yard as I have a 32 year old special needs son. So despite wanting Beautiful layers I need the kind that won’t peck at children. Do you have any suggestions? Or anyone? Need Help!

Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps are both very docile breeds, feathered puppies. They are also some of the best long term layers and live longer than the average hatchery breed. They are both quite hardy and can tolerate both heat and very cold temps.

If you aren’t interested in eggs, Seramas are a wonderful choice. For big chickens, Orpingtons, austalorps, and Easter egger are good choices.

Personally I would get serama as if I didn’t have such a big open area, and we have WAY to many hawks for me to be comfortable with them running around lol. @allosaurusrock your chickens are beautiful

@ParadisedivaChic Faverolles are pretty mellow chickens. Even the roosters are docile in my experience.

Yes! Orpingtons. I have Buff, Lavender and Australorps and with the exception of one particularly crabby BO, they are all good candidates for your purpose.

Faverolles have a sort of goofy personality. I really enjoy them.

Cochins are supposed to be really docile too! Russian orloffs are also great

If this is your first flock, and you want peaceful, don't get a rooster. I say that, but I've never had a Faverolle, and maybe they are different. Just saying a rooster is a whole different level of complication.

Oh true, my Russian Orloffs are very calm and sweet girls Cochins are on my list for next spring. I've never had them, but they're so cute!!
