If I were you, I would call your state ag office, and get the number or address of a local Orchard to you, and go for a visit. Here in NH, we can not grow Granny Smith with any hope of fruit, as there simply is not enough time for the fruit to mature. the plant blooms too early and the bees are still to cold to get to them, and they often loose thier flowers to an untimely frost. But we grow Macs prety well!!
If you can not find a local orchard, call a nursery nearby to you, one that has been around for a long time, and has knowledgable staff, not your local lowes or
walmart. They also could tell you about your specific region, and what does well there!
And one last thought, you should try a Honey Crisp apple this fall, if you like apples, this newer type is top of the line in my humble opinion, YUMMY!
