Applying Elector PSP in cold weather

I just wanted to give an update about my hen.

She is doing great again!! At first it seemed like it only got worse, but after 4 or 5 days the mites were almost gone. There are still a few slow moving ones, so I will give my chickens one more treatment, and that should be it!

My chickens had a stressful time (moving from CO to MA, living in the garage for a while), so I think that could have been a problem with not being able to cope with the mites themselves...

Stress can indeed be a factor.

Hello I just discovered my chickens have a bad mite infestation. I feel like such an idiot I have to do weekly checks. It’s four that are in their own small coop but I feel terrible. It’s absolutely freezing here too so the coop will be difficult to clean. We ordered poultry dust, the liquid permethrin as well. They are on amazon prime two day shipping and I’m going to pick up DE from tractor supply tomorrow. I feel like the worst mother in the world. My favorite chicken is in that coop although she isn’t as badly infected as the other two I haven’t checked the forth but they are all getting treated I’m going to post pictures tomorrow. I almost just ordered the elector but I’m going to hold off a bit...

I think she means that you need to treat again after 7-10 days to get the newly hatched bugs.

Correct. The Elector PSP company advertises one treatment is enough to eliminate mites but nothing about lice, but if you read their data sheet is also says repeated spraying may be needed, and sometimes it is good to do a rotational spraying using another product like permethrin.

Oh ok thank you yes I will treat them several times. I’m worried the birds in the other coop have them. My roosters bantam and Silkie stay in the other coop but they mate birds in the infested coop ugh I hope I don’t have to treat 8 addition birds. Should I though just to be safe?
I am going to clean the other coop and put DE etc. I also have two turkeys who are in the “uninfested coop” should I treat them?

Forget the DE......won't do squat.
Check all your birds and treat if needed.

Have you checked them over real well for mites and/or lice?

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

Thank you so much... that’s what I was thinking too about the DE the only reason I was going to is because that’s all I can get for now my amazon order won’t come until tomorrow. I can try to search around a bit. What do you think about giving the 4 of them a bath?

Two definitely have an infestation I saw them crawling all around.. and I’m assuming the other two have them as well. I was thinking of giving the 4 a good soak today. Maybe kill off some mites that way until permethrin comes? ?I can get flea and tick shampoo but I have dawn soap that’s how I killed fleas of my rescue kittens but I guess it’s different than mites..

I just checked and Amazon’s not saying its coming until Tuesday I feel like that’s too long I have a feed store I can call I hope they have something.
