Thank you! I meant 2 and 4, but yes, this is helpful to my learning. I’m still trying to discern comb types on chicks!

The combs are hard, just add to the guessing game. I just keep using google lens and upload a photo and see what it suggests but as they are getting more feathers and colours on them it will get easier I hope! Problem is I can group the same type and then check wattle and comb colour for Roos and pullets but then I read that some breeds it is harder and don’t want to miss label Roos if I can find loving homes for them instead. Thanks for input

I am pretty sure 13 is a Gold Laced Wyandotte.

Number 13 has a rose comb, bright gold color, and single lacing (1 black line on each feather.)

Barnevelders have single combs and usually have a rich red/brown color rather than a bright gold. They also have double lacing (2 black lines on each feather for hens, somewhat different pattern that is not so obviously laced on roosters), although as chicks the feathers may show dots or speckles or crosswise lines instead of the adult pattern.

Yes, there are a lot of possible breeds, and some of the differences can be hard to spot!

2 off color buff Brahma or Brahma mix.

3 Easter egger

4 Brahma mix

5 lavender Orpington

7 Light Brahma

8 Buff Orpington mix

9 Rhode Island red

10 gold laced Wyandotte or a mix of that breed with something else

11 Australorp, perhaps

12 Wyandotte mix

13 gold laced Wyandotte

We have 50 to sort and rehome. the extra hens we can’t keep which won’t be too hard. Then to try and find homes for the Roos. Just thinking if I know what type they could be might be easier to find a home for someone looking for a particular chook.

Cochins have feathered legs and single combs.
Chick 1 is not a Cochin, because it has clean legs and a rose comb.
Chick 4 is not a Cochin, because it has a pea comb.


No, because all varieties of Wyandotte have clean feet, but chick 7 has feathered feet.

I agree with most of @JedJackson list, although I might have guessed a few to be less-than-ideal purebreds where he guessed mixes.



I think chick 8 is probably a Buff Sussex, rather than a Buff Orpington mix.

For some reason I missed the feathered legs. Thanks for spotting that.
