April 2023 Hatch-A-Long

Pics
I candled my 21 and all are still going strong!

I have ANOTHER girl going broody! I want to break her but hate locking them up so since she just barely started today I took her out of the box and put her on the roost. hopefully that is enough to cool her belly off and break her. LOL

I do have one that has been broody for just about the same time my eggs have been in the incubator. I wanted to see how she was and if the other girls bullied her etc. So far she is doing great! so I may give her a couple eggs from the incubator when I put them in lockdown and let her hatch them then give her some more that hatch out of the incubator. That would give me less in the brooder to worry about. Still debating on it though. But I had amazing luck last year with my 4 that raised babies with the rest of the group. It is so much easier to have broody raised babies but those ones weren't as friendly either......

I went to the store on Tues. They only had eggs from a farm an hr away.

I set them this AM.
Today, Thurs. They had eggs from a farm closer, I bought these, and are warming them up to put in the incubator, tomorrow. They look similar. The ones below I hatched 50% just recently, but I was gone during lockdown, I hope to be here and get a better result.

The air cells looked good, they were in the egg fridge at the grocer, and it was quite cold. I think they will be okay though.

I'm a little sad this morning. The splash marans chick from yesterday is still doing well, and three of my mosaic cross chicks from my flock have hatched to join it.... but the majority of the shipped splash marans eggs are sitting with no progress. Two that were pipped yesterday look the same. I'm afraid this is the whole group out of 18 set. And if the splash chick doesn't have a friend it means I'm not going to be able to sell the mosaic crosses as intended. Holding tight for the day though. Will not open incubator!

I hope some more hatch for you. What day are you on?

I’ve had good luck breaking newish broodies by moving them to the pearch after dark. Like they’re confused enough by it being nighttime that it overrides their broody nest homing program.

She stayed on the roost about 30-45 min then back to the box. But has been off most of the day so hopefully that did it. Lol. I don't need another one right now!
