April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

I think the membranes in my eggs are too dry. My eggs pipped 24 hours ago and some have made no progress and some have made little. I can see the membrane is looking very yellow. Humidity is up to 70% but I had a few issues in the first day of lockdown. And they pipped early. I did help one little chick who I could see was trying very hard. It had some membrane stuck to its wing which was sticking to the shell so it couldn't move. I picked that away (the membrane is still on its wing I just freed it from the shell) and I picked most of the shell away it hasn't been able to reach. It is almost out but I don't know what to do with the rest. One is half way zipped but I don't know how long to leave it before I assist.

The humidity is good, give them some time to let it work. It can take over 24 hours after first Pip through the shell. It literally takes thousands of pecks to make that first hole, then the are tired and aclimating to real air. The yellowish or brownish tone does not seem to turn back to white once remoisturised I had to assist one sticky chick at the end there as well. Zipping can be super quick but average time is ussually 12 hours. Leave them be but watch for slowing down in peeping sounds, they should be making a fair amount of noise while they are working. Good luck!

Thanks. I've been reading and its says after 24 hours they might need help. I've had 3 hatch (one that was definately stuck and I picked the bit off for it) and 2 others that managed on their own. Another one is almost finished zipping so hopefully it'll be out soon. I can see a few others have pipped done of them since yesterday. I can't really see if they are moving or anything and the only peeps I hear are from the 3 that are hatched. It's 8.30am here so I'm going to go out for a few hours and hopefully some have progressed.

Also because I know humidity has been low. It took me a while to get it right even after some eggs started pipping it was at times still dropping to 50%. I finally have it right now. It's my first incubation and I got humidity and temp right before I set the eggs but I didn't think about lockdown or figuring out how much water is needed or how that's affect temperature. So because of the lower humidity and I know that 1 chick was slightly stuck I am very paranoid about the others!

This sure is stressfull!!!

Well, looks like this second hatch will be a bust too, only one egg looks viable right now at lock down. That'll bring me up to a grand total of 3 chicks of 48 eggs from that seller if it hatches. Not sure yet which variable is the issue (seller, weather, incubation, time-since-lay) but I'll know more when my third hatch makes it to lock down. Right now, from the same incubator this failed hatch was in, all 21 eggs from a local source are developing fine at day 7. That's far better than the ~50% showing any sign of development in the previous hatches.

I knew those two hatches would be a learning experience, and expected low results since it was also on shipped eggs, but that sure is discouraging. One thing I learned for sure: don't put all your eggs in one basket via seller - if I had a couple of sources I could at least have a better idea if it was incubation vs source as the cause. I won't know weather until I have other shipped eggs to compare to.

If it got too dry after waiting a while longer, would it be okay to put a warm damp paper towel to mosten the membrane? Would there be any kind of lubricant that could be put on the membrane to keep it from drying out? Just brainstorming here...much luck with the hatch!

Thanks. I thought it was halirious.

I wish I'd known I was going to be hatching chicks I would have saved our peeps boxes from easter. That is a very cute idea!!

waiting for chick 2,3,4 to hatch they have pipped now I am hoping to see at least one of them hatching out so I can catch it on video.. would be good if all 3 hatch before I hit the hay. So far a few other eggs have rocked but no pips or peeps.
