April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

well all of my chicks have hatched except for one , so i opened up the egg at the air cell , but not into the next layer , and it looks like the chick hasnt absorbed the yolk , so what should i do , open the rest and leave him in the incubator or leave it alone like it is ?

I only had one of seven viable eggs hatch, and I had to assist her with her hatch. Eggtopsy revealed 3 fully formed chicks in a fluid filled egg...and 3 fully formed eggs in what looked like a normal egg. Go figure!!! Honestly, I had wanted to candle and assist at the end of 21st day, but since it is my first hatch, I was trying to follow the instructions given on the Learning tab, about NOT INTERVENING! However, I feel like if I had opened the bator and candled them at the end of the 21st day, I may have been able to save the 3 normal looking eggs. Very frustrating. Next time, I will follow my mothering instincts and go ahead with candling and possibly assisting, if needed. Just wanted to put that out there, in case someone was considering intervention the same way I was. I would say, go with what your instincts tell you. The Hatching learning section has a title called Hatching 101, and inside that document she has a link to an article on how to assist a hatch. It was very informative, and next time I'll use it earlier.

Put it back in the shell in the incubator. If you've only made a small hole it should be ok. Keep checking it every few hours and pick a little more shell and outer membrane away every now and then and see if there is any veining if there is put it back for a few hours. I found that a few of my chicks who pipped and had a bigger hole but took a while to hatch dried out a bit around the pip and needed a little assistance.

Jackydb, has she made the internal pip? meaning, has her beak broken through into the air cell? IF not, try to open right at the area where the beak is, just a small hole to expose her little beak and let her get some air. Then, put her back in and give her time to absorb the yolk. Keep a watch on her.

Since I ended up with only one chick...I cheated and went on Craig's list and found a nearby person who had hatched some ameraucanas, and got my little Shelly some sisters. Now, have 5 little chicks in the brooder. (Using the female gender, in hopes it's true!!!)
